The Defence Services Staff College (DSSC is located at Wellington (Nilgiris) in Tamil Nadu. Wellington is at an alt of 1,880 m (6,150 ft) above sea level.
DSSC is one of the oldest military institutions in India. It was set up in India in 1905 as the Army Staff College at Deolali and was relocated to Quetta, now in Pak, in 1907. On partition of the subcontinent, the Indian complement moved to Wellington in 1947. By 1950, it was progressively transformed into a fully Integrated Defence Services Staff College, imparting training to middle level officers of the three wings of the Armed Forces - Army, Navy and Air Force jointly with a few officers from the Indian Civil Services, PMF and friendly foreign countries (FFCs).
The vision for DSSC as enshrined in the COSC Directive 2015 is:-
“Be the centre of excellence for joint operations training and staff work, Develop officers with analytical & creative thinking skills and hone their judgement & decision making ability”.
The College enjoys international recognition as a premier joint military training institution of the World. A large number of developed and developing countries seek vacancies on the course for their officers each year. Presently, 36 international officers are attending the 73rd Staff Course. Many graduates of this College have risen to top positions in their respective countries. It is a matter of pride for the College that its model has been adopted by the United Kingdom, Zambia, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Botswana and some of the Middle East countries.
The College runs one Staff Course every year commencing in Jun and concluding in Apr, the following year. Orientation Course for foreign and Civil Services student officers is conducted for two weeks prior to commencement of the Staff Course, to enable these students to gain background knowledge and to help them settle down administratively before the commencement of the main course. Presently, 475 student officers of 74th Staff Course at DSSC are undergoing the Course.
