Lt Gen Rajiv Mohan Gupta, VSM, MBBS, MD (Microbiology), DNB (Pathology), Ph.D.(Virology), M.Phil., MNAMS, an academician of substance, assumed the appointment of Deputy Chief of Integrated Defense Staff (Medical) on 24 Mar 2022. He is an alumnus of Armed Forces Medical College from the 1979 (R) batch. He was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in Dec 1983. He is a Clinical Microbiologist and a Virologist who has done his post graduation in Microbiology from AFMC Pune in 1990,having stood first in Pune University. He acquired Ph.D. in Virology from AIIMS New Delhi in 2004. The officer has been awarded Fogarty International Fellowship for HIV/AIDS Training at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2001, and the Fellowship ofHenry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine at Bangkok, Thailand in 2004.

The officer has been a Professor of Microbiology at AFMC, Pune & Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi. He is an Inspector in Microbiology for the National Medical Council, and a Post Graduate Teacher & Examiner.The officer has a large number of publications and has authored chapters in various text books. His special areas of research include Virology including Retro-virology, Molecular Epidemiology and application of Molecular Diagnostic Techniques to Clinical Infectious Disease Diagnosis & follow-up. He has been a speaker at various national and international conferences. He is credited with having set up the first Virology & Molecular Biology Laboratory in Command Hospital (Northern Command).

The General Officer is an able administrator. He is an alumnus of the National Defense College. The officer was the Commandant of Command Hospital (Northern Command), Udhampur.He has also heldthe prestigious staff appointments of Deputy Director General Medical Services (Information Technology) and Deputy Director General Medical Services (Personnel) in the Directorate General of Medical Services (Army) at New Delhi.

Prior to assuming the appointment of DCIDS (Medical), the officer was Major General Medical Services Western Command. A major responsibility orchestrated during the Covid-19 Pandemic was liaison with civil authority for HADR (Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief) activities.

For his dedication and committed service to the organization, he has been awarded the Chief of Army Staff Commendation twice, and the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM)by the President of India in 2016 for hisexemplary service and contribution to scientific research.

He is happily married to Mrs Shalini Gupta, and the couple is blessed with two sons.
